Telemark – a Treasure Trove for Geologists

Telemark’s history of exporting stone dates back a thousand years. Whetstones from Eidsborg in Tokke, some hundred kilometres from the coast, were excavated and transported across the great lakes and past waterfalls to Skien, where they could be shipped all over the world.
Mining in this region dates back to the 16th century. The first mines opened in Norway were situated in Telemark, at Fyresdal and Seljord. Niobium, molybdenum, nickel, quartz and iron ore are but a few examples of what has been excavated over the centuries. The museum at Åmdals Verk in Tokke boasts exquisite exhibitions where ancient mining can be viewed and experienced.

Telemark, with its many rare rocks and minerals, is one of the most exciting geological areas of Norway. Fensfeltet near Ulefoss in Central Telemark is especially exciting as there is evidence of the presence of thorium, which experts believe may one day be a source of worldwide energy.
